2005 9/11 + 5 Flipbook

“To turn the pages click on a corner or drag from the middle edge of the page to control the turn.”

This book was conceived in response to the question, “What can an individual do about the war in Iraq?”. It first existed as a drum leaf book, 5.75″ x 5.5″, with acrylic paste paint and collograph printed pages on Fabriano paper, ceramic covers painted with acrylic, and red kangaroo spine. The pages were scanned and text added in Photoshop. The page-turning flipbook is a second iteration. With appreciation to Laura Wait for sharing her paste painting techniques and to Tim Ely for sharing his drum leaf binding technique.

Using commercially sourced images, “Girlfriends” traces the not uncommon trajectory of women’s lives. The text reads: Mothers, Family, Daughters, Friends, Celebrating, Relating, Growing, Together, Alone, Apart, Lonely, Away, Engaging, Marrying, Caring, Other.

The book is Coptic bound, 6” x 4” with 40 collaged pages, eco printed with foliage and blueberries. There is a cover of stamped solder over brass with a small copper onlay and a paper wrapper.
