Personal Geographies

These images, related to a trip to Australia and New Zealand, pay homage to the historically unbroken, intimate knowledge of the land that marries people to place in ownership. They reference our communal journey and reinforce our unity with the world in which we live.

In Australia, the concept of Songlines is to “sing the place”, to recreate and remember the literal or figurative landscape in song. As with words and music, rendering a location visually is the equivalent of a map of experience, creating a sense of place from the components of memory.

Using gridded surfaces, paintings, photographs and collaged ephemera, this 16″ x 16″ series abstracts important events and places that are part of my personal geography.
